What It Means to Be a Grown Ass Man
Video overview: Being a grown ass man is not about acting tough, controlling your wife or pretending nothing hurts you. It’s about becoming secure enough in yourself that you stop asking your marriage to give you the happiness, confidence and connection you haven’t built inside yet.

What does it actually mean to be a grown ass man?

I know that phrase can sound harsh. It can sound like criticism. It can sound like somebody telling you to stop feeling, stop needing, stop caring and just toughen up.

That’s not what I mean.

Being a grown ass man is not about becoming cold, hard, dominant or emotionally shut down. It’s not about pretending you don’t want love, affection, sex or appreciation. It’s not about acting like nothing gets to you.

It’s about becoming responsible for the man you are being.

That is very different.

A lot of men spend years trying to make their wife happy. They try to say the right thing, avoid the wrong thing, help more, apologize faster, stay out of trouble, keep the peace and figure out what version of themselves will finally make her soften.

And when she still seems unhappy, distant, critical, cold or uninterested, they feel defeated.

They think, “I’ve tried everything. Nothing works. I can’t make her happy.”

And brother, maybe that’s the problem.

You were never supposed to make her happy.

You can love her. You can listen to her. You can care about her experience. You can take responsibility for your side of the relationship. You can create more safety, trust, warmth and leadership in the home.

But you cannot live your life as a man whose entire job is managing a woman’s emotional state.

That will crush you.

And it will not make her feel attracted to you.

Because when a man becomes obsessed with making his wife happy, he often loses contact with himself. He stops asking what he wants. He stops speaking honestly. He stops having clear standards. He stops bringing his own energy, sexuality, playfulness and direction into the room.

He becomes careful.

And careful is not the same as loving.

Careful is often fear in a nice shirt.

Your wife may be unhappy. Your marriage may be struggling. There may be real things you need to look at and clean up. But the answer is not becoming a man who waits for her mood to tell him whether he’s okay.

The answer is becoming more grown.

More secure. More honest. More self-led. More connected to your own emotional well-being.

Because it is ridiculous to think you can create a happy, affectionate, sexual, connected marriage while you are not a happy, affectionate, sexual, connected man.

That sentence may sting a little.

Good.

Not because I want you to feel ashamed, but because I want you to wake up.

If you are disconnected from yourself, your wife will feel it. If you are miserable, resentful and shut down, she will feel it. If you are waiting for her to desire you before you feel sexual and alive again, she will feel that too.

That’s a lot of pressure on her.

A grown man stops putting that kind of responsibility on someone else.

He starts taking care of his own inside game.

That means he stops outsourcing his confidence to his wife’s approval. He stops outsourcing his happiness to the amount of affection he gets. He stops outsourcing his masculinity to whether sex is happening this week.

Again, this does not mean those things don’t matter.

Of course they matter.

You want affection. You want intimacy. You want a loving marriage. You want a sexual connection with the woman you chose. There is nothing wrong with that.

But if you need those things in order to feel like a whole man, you’re going to show up with need instead of strength.

And she will feel the difference.

A grown ass man can want deeply without becoming desperate. He can be hurt without becoming childish. He can be disappointed without becoming punishing. He can say, “This matters to me,” without turning his wife into the enemy.

He can lead himself first.

That is the foundation of everything else.

When you take care of your own emotional well-being, you become easier to trust. You stop dumping every feeling onto her. You stop reacting to every facial expression. You stop making every conversation a test of whether she loves you enough.

You become steadier.

And steadiness is sexy in a way most men underestimate.

Not boring steadiness. Not passive steadiness. I mean the kind of steadiness that says, “I know who I am. I know what I want. I can handle discomfort. I can tell the truth. I can love you without losing myself.”

That kind of man changes the emotional weather in a home.

He does not need to lecture. He does not need to dominate. He does not need to win every argument.

He just stops being a boy waiting for someone else to make him feel okay.

That’s why this matters right now, whatever struggle you’re facing.

If your marriage is cold, your grown man work matters. If your wife is unhappy, your grown man work matters. If sex has disappeared, your grown man work matters. If you’re facing separation, rejection, criticism or uncertainty, this matters even more.

Because pressure reveals who you are practicing being.

If you practice panic, you become panicked. If you practice resentment, you become resentful. If you practice blaming her for your emotional state, you become weaker every day.

But if you practice self-respect, honesty, emotional responsibility and grounded confidence, you become a man you can trust again.

And when you trust yourself, everything changes.

You stop chasing. You stop hiding. You stop trying to earn your place in your own marriage. You stop making your wife the source of your identity.

You start bringing yourself back into the relationship.

A happier man. A more sexual man. A more connected man. A man with a spine and a heart. A man who can give love because he is no longer trying to get his entire sense of worth from the woman in front of him.

That is what I mean by being a grown ass man.

Not perfect.

Responsible.

Not hard.

Secure.

Not detached.

Self-led.

And if you want a better marriage, a better sex life, a better future and a better relationship with yourself, that is where the work begins.
