The 3 Crucial Questions Most Men Can’t Clearly Answer
Video overview: If you don’t know your values, your marriage, your moods and everyone else’s expectations will keep pulling you all over the place. A man needs clear standards for himself, for his life and for the people he allows close to him. This video is about why values are the first thing we teach men — because without them, confidence has nowhere to stand.

The first thing we talk about with men in our courses, retreats and coaching programs is values.

Not because it sounds impressive.

Not because it makes a nice worksheet.

Because without values, a man is easy to move.

He gets moved by his wife’s mood. He gets moved by criticism. He gets moved by guilt. He gets moved by fear. He gets moved by whatever argument happened last night, whatever look she gave him this morning or whatever pressure he feels from work, kids, money or family.

And before long, he doesn’t really know who he is anymore.

He only knows who he is trying not to upset.

That is a miserable way for a man to live.

Call them values, operating principles, commandments, standards, declarations or non-negotiables. I don’t care what word you use. What matters is that you know what you expect of yourself, what you expect for yourself and what you expect from the people you allow into your life.

Most men have never actually sat down and told the truth about this.

They have vague ideas. They want respect. They want honesty. They want sex. They want peace. They want loyalty. They want a loving marriage. They want less drama and more connection.

Good.

But vague wants do not guide a man under pressure.

When your wife is upset, when she pulls away, when she criticizes you, when you feel rejected, when you’re lonely, when you’re scared of divorce, when you feel like you’re failing as a husband — that is when your values matter.

Because in those moments, your emotions will try to make choices for you.

Fear will tell you to please.

Resentment will tell you to punish.

Shame will tell you to collapse.

Anger will tell you to attack.

Loneliness will tell you to beg.

Your values are what help you slow down and say, “No. That’s not who I am. That’s not how I choose to show up. That’s not the man I respect.”

That is the beginning of real confidence.

Not confidence as a feeling. Feelings come and go. I’m talking about confidence as a relationship with yourself. The kind where you know you can trust yourself to act from your standards even when life gets messy.

That is powerful.

A man who has no clear standards will keep looking to his wife to tell him if he’s okay. If she’s warm, he relaxes. If she’s distant, he panics. If she praises him, he feels strong. If she criticizes him, he feels worthless. If she wants sex, he feels like a man. If she doesn’t, he starts doubting everything about himself.

That’s not love.

That’s emotional dependence.

And it puts a terrible amount of pressure on the relationship.

When a man knows his values, he stops asking his wife to be the source of his identity. He can love her more cleanly. He can listen without falling apart. He can desire without becoming needy. He can set boundaries without becoming harsh. He can take responsibility without turning every mistake into proof that he’s a failure.

That’s why we start here.

Before we talk about how to communicate better, how to rebuild intimacy, how to handle rejection, how to lead through conflict or how to create more passion, we have to know who the man is trying to become.

What does he stand for?

What does he refuse to participate in anymore?

What does he require from himself?

What kind of behavior does he no longer excuse in himself just because he is stressed, lonely or afraid?

What kind of treatment does he no longer accept from others, not because he is trying to control them, but because he respects his own life?

These questions are not about becoming rigid or self-righteous. This is not about walking around with a list of rules and judging everybody who doesn’t meet them.

This is about clarity.

A clear man is easier to trust.

He doesn’t change shape every time someone is disappointed in him. He doesn’t say yes when he means no and then resent you later. He doesn’t pretend he’s fine while quietly building a case against you. He doesn’t make his wife responsible for guessing where he stands.

He knows.

And because he knows, the people around him can feel it.

That matters in marriage. It matters in fatherhood. It matters at work. It matters in every room you walk into.

If your marriage is struggling, your values become even more important. Because you may be tempted to make saving the marriage your highest value. You may start tolerating behavior you don’t respect. You may start abandoning your truth. You may start trying to become whatever version of yourself you think will keep her from leaving.

That is not leadership.

A marriage is not saved by a man losing himself.

It has a much better chance when a man finds himself again.

This video is about that foundation. It’s about why every man needs to get clear on his own operating principles before he tries to fix everyone else. It’s about why your inside game has to come before the outside game.

Because you can work hard, make money, take care of the house, raise kids, solve problems and still feel completely lost inside yourself.

I don’t want that for you.

I want you to know what you stand for. I want you to know how you choose to love. I want you to know what honesty, courage, warmth, discipline, respect and self-responsibility mean in your real life, not as nice words on a page.

And I want you to practice living them when it’s hard.

That’s where a man becomes solid.

Not perfect.

Solid.

And a solid man can create something very different in his life, his marriage and the way he feels about himself.

Get clear on who you are

If you feel like your marriage or life keeps pulling you away from yourself, we can help you get clear on your values and standards. You don’t have to guess your way through this — you can build the kind of inner foundation a man can actually trust.
