How To Create More Intimacy In Your Marriage
Video overview: If you’re trying to get more closeness, affection, and sex from your wife while she feels tense, distant, or shut down, you’re probably starting in the wrong place. Real intimacy begins when you stop trying to drag her into your world and learn how to meet her where she actually is.

Want to know how to create more intimacy in your marriage?

That’s the question a lot of men are asking, even if they don’t always say it that cleanly. What they usually say is, “Why doesn’t she want to be close?” or “Why does everything feel so hard?” or “Why do I feel like I’m always the one wanting more?”

And I get it.

You want more affection. You want more sex. You want more warmth. You want to feel like your wife actually enjoys being around you, not just coordinating life with you.

You don’t want to live in a marriage that feels like a calendar, a checklist, and a polite roommate agreement.

But here’s the part that trips men up.

You may be trying to lead her toward intimacy without first connecting to where she is emotionally.

That matters.

A lot of men come into a moment already holding the outcome they want. They want a good conversation. They want a hug. They want flirting. They want sex. They want reassurance that everything is okay.

So they move toward her with that energy.

But if she’s stressed, tired, guarded, distracted, resentful, overwhelmed, or emotionally closed, your desire for connection can feel like pressure. Not because you’re wrong to want it. Not because you’re a bad man. But because you’re trying to take her somewhere without first understanding where she is.

That’s why I use this analogy with men all the time.

You don’t lead someone across a dance floor by standing ten feet away and yelling, “Come over here and move the way I want you to move.”

You go to her. You feel the rhythm she’s already in. You take her hand. You match for a moment. Then you begin to lead.

That’s intimacy.

It’s not forcing. It’s not begging. It’s not explaining. It’s not trying to convince her that she should feel more relaxed, more playful, more affectionate, or more sexual.

It’s learning how to connect first.

And brother, I know that can be frustrating when you’ve been starving for connection for a long time. You may think, “Why do I always have to be the one doing this? Why do I have to understand her state when nobody seems to care about mine?”

That’s a fair question.

But leadership is not about keeping score. Leadership is about going first with strength, clarity, and emotional maturity because you are choosing the kind of man you want to be.

If you want more intimacy, you have to stop treating your wife’s current emotional state like an obstacle. You have to start seeing it as the starting point.

If she’s tense, start there.

If she’s tired, start there.

If she’s guarded, start there.

If she’s playful, start there too.

Most men miss this because they’re so focused on getting to the destination. They want the fun, flirtatious, sexual connection, but they don’t know how to build the bridge from where she is right now to where they want the two of them to go.

So they jump.

They make a sexual comment when she’s not warmed up. They touch her with expectation in their hands. They try to fix her mood. They ask why she’s distant. They push for a conversation. They silently resent her for not meeting them halfway.

And then they wonder why she pulls back.

She pulls back because she doesn’t feel met.

Again, this doesn’t mean you become responsible for her emotions. It doesn’t mean you walk on eggshells. It doesn’t mean you hide your desire or become some careful, sexless therapist in your own marriage.

It means you become more skillful.

You learn how to feel the room. You learn how to listen without needing to fix. You learn how to bring lightness instead of heaviness. You learn how to create safety without becoming boring. You learn how to invite instead of demand.

That’s a very different kind of man to be around.

This is the inside game most men were never taught. We were taught how to work hard, solve problems, provide, and get things done. But intimacy doesn’t respond well to task-mode energy.

Your wife is not a project.

Her body is not a problem to solve.

Her desire is not a machine you can repair by finding the right button.

She is a human being with an emotional state, a nervous system, memories, fears, resentments, longings, and a deep need to feel safe before she can feel open.

And you have those things too.

That’s why this work starts inside you first. Because if you feel rejected, needy, resentful, or impatient, she will feel that before she hears your words. If your affection comes loaded with expectation, she will feel the weight of it. If your playfulness is really a tactic to get sex, she will feel the agenda.

But when you become calmer in yourself, everything changes.

You can walk into the room and notice her without making her responsible for your mood. You can be warm without chasing. You can be direct without pressure. You can bring humor, touch, attention, and desire in a way that feels like an invitation instead of a demand.

That’s how intimacy begins to return.

Not all at once. Not because you found the magic line. Not because she suddenly becomes the old version of herself overnight.

It returns because the emotional climate starts changing.

She feels you meeting her instead of managing her. She feels your desire without your desperation. She feels your leadership without your control. She feels that you can handle the moment you’re actually in.

That’s attractive.

And it’s also deeply respectful.

If your marriage feels stuck, I want you to stop asking only, “How do I get more affection and sex?” and start asking, “How do I create the conditions where closeness feels natural again?”

That’s a better question.

Because intimacy isn’t something you extract from your wife. It’s something you create between you.

And the man who learns how to meet, connect, and then lead is the man who gives that connection a real chance to breathe again.
